Summit on Reducing Energy Intensity in Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - January 30, 2008: A highly motivated group of Federal, State, public and private stakeholders gathered to discuss successes, future goals, and barriers involved in reducing energy intensity in Wisconsin industries.

The “Summit on Reducing Energy Intensity in Wisconsin” featured Doug Kaempf, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program. Also in attendance were  representatives of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Department of Commerce, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and high-ranking representatives of companies and trade associations.

The summit was organized and sponsored by Focus On Energy, CleanTech Partners (a non-profit corporation moving energy efficient technologies to the marketplace, funded in part by Focus), and the host company, Johnson Controls, Inc.  The summit was moderated by Tom Still, President of Wisconsin Technology Council.

During the summit, the DOE unveiled an efficiency target for industry, asking them to commit to reducing energy intensity (energy consumed per unit of production) by 25% over 10 years. Participants took turns discussing successes for energy efficiency and sustainability, as well as identifying barriers to energy efficiency projects and initiatives.  The final hour of the day was spent brainstorming and identifying what actions may be necessary to overcome these barriers.  The summit is viewed as a first step to improving both the climate for business and the ‘business of climate’ in Wisconsin.
