CleanTech Partners looks for a good return on investment, too, but we maintain a more expansive definition of “good return.” We apply criteria to our candidates that weigh financial payback alongside additional benefits such as energy efficiency, job creation, and environmental stewardship.

Focusing on seed-stage and start-ups

CleanTech Partners invests in businesses that most venture capitalists and banks find too risky to get involved with – innovative technologies, unfamiliar markets, pre-commercialized applications. It’s not that we invest in riskier ventures. We just have a better handle on what the true risks are.

Our due diligence process gives us the confidence to invest in niche businesses at earlier stages in their growth. We lower our risk by developing a thorough understanding of the technologies under development and assessing, not only commercial viability, but also technical viability.

Providing up to $350,000 per client

We provide capital in the form of loans or equity to companies not typically served by traditional financial resources. Financial assistance from CleanTech Partners can take a number of forms:

  • Matching funds for grants

The CleanTech staff have extensive experience with business start-ups, from both sides of the table. That means we’re adept at assessing the potential of candidate businesses and at structuring financing packages that are most appropriate for early-stage companies with limited cash flow.

By the time we’ve finished our discernment work, other investors are often interested in taking a second look at the candidate because we’ve demystified the investment to provide a more accurate picture of the risk involved. In the end, it’s not uncommon for banks, angels, venture capitalists, or granting organizations to partner with CleanTech Partner in providing a complete financing package.

Going beyond financial assistance

Because we have a stake in our clients’ success, we partner with them and mentor them along their commercialization path. Unlike venture capitalists, banks, and non-profit grantors, we help them leverage state, federal and other private resources in the areas of business planning and intellectual property management. We offer technical, business and financial expertise to help them span the divide between the development and adoption of their new technology. We also help our investment partners identify and apply for appropriate state and federal grants.
